The George Institute names distinguished businessman Michael Hawker AM as its new Chair

After an extensive international search, The George Institute for Global Health has appointed Mr Michael Hawker AM as chair of its board of directors. Mr Hawker is a former CEO of Insurance Australia Group Ltd and a director of Australian and international companies including Aviva, Macquarie Group, Macquarie Bank and the Australian Rugby Union.

The George Institute for Global Health is an internationally-recognised health research organisation aiming to improve the health of millions worldwide by research and influencing policy for those around the world most vulnerable to chronic disease and injury.

Mr Hawker acknowledged the fine contribution of Dr John Yu, who stepped down in December last year after five years as Chair. He expressed great interest in The George Institute’s expansion into Asia, particularly China, and said he was delighted to support the Institute as it builds its value in solving the world’s health issues.

The Deputy Chair of The George Institute Mr Don Green said Mr Hawker’s business credentials and international experience will help the Institute strengthen its existing global business.

“We are delighted to have Mike’s business expertise to enhance our strong global research reputation,” Mr Green said.

In addition to his business acumen, Mr Hawker is also actively involved in fostering relationships between business and the community sector.  He founded the Australian Business and Community Network that provides mentoring, partnering and support programs to students and schools and chairs the NSW Juvenile Diabetes 'Walk to Cure' annual fundraising event.

Mr Hawker said The George Institute was a well-respected and innovative Australian organisation that is expanding internationally, and he was confident his experiences could assist that expansion.
