The George Institute for Global Health enters exciting new phase in the UK
5 May 2020, OXFORD: Following the launch of its Strategy 2025, The George Institute for Global Health is preparing for an exciting new phase in the UK that will see it leave the University of Oxford to take up new opportunities elsewhere.
A renowned global health research institute headquartered in Sydney, Australia, and focused on non-communicable diseases and injuries, The George Institute in the UK has been affiliated with the University of Oxford since 2010. During that time, it has led pioneering research in areas including chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, injury, multimorbidity, and women’s health, and has become a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Injury Prevention and Trauma Care.
“We value highly the lasting relationships and friendships we have made and look forward to continuing our many research collaborations with Oxford colleagues,” said Professor Robyn Norton, Principal Director of The George Institute for Global Health and Acting Executive Director at The George Institute, UK.
“While we have major offices in Australia, China and India, and more than 700 staff working in over 50 countries, we’ve always seen the UK as central to our research and impact strategies, and we are excited about plans that will enable us to take up fresh opportunities and form new partnerships.”
The George Institute’s operations in the UK will build on its Strategy 2025, which aims to improve the health of millions of people worldwide, particularly those living in disadvantaged circumstances in both rich and poor countries alike. The strategy focuses on Better Treatments for the world’s biggest health problems; Better Care, transforming primary health care to deliver better health to more people; Healthier Societies, harnessing the power of governments, markets and communities to improve health.
“Unique among medical research institutes, we have established separate commercial operations to help translate our insights and innovations into impact, and recently raised an historic £30 million in capital to fund scale-up,” said Professor Stephen MacMahon, co-Principal Director at The George Institute.
“Our social enterprise, George Health, is headquartered in London, and we are very excited about the next phase of our journey in the UK, which will be facilitated by the Institute's move from Oxford. We will be making a further announcement about this in the near future.”
The George Institute’s work in the UK started in 2004 with the establishment of a London office housing a research group analysing investment trends in the development of new treatments for neglected diseases. In 2008, this group received a major award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Two years later, The George Centre for Healthcare Innovation was established in partnership with the University of Oxford, with generous support from the Oxford Martin School founded by Dr James Martin. In 2013 this officially became The George Institute, UK, and in 2015, the institute moved to the Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health within the Medical Sciences Division.
