Our history
1999:
The George Institute is founded in Australia, with the support of the University of Sydney Medical School, to reduce the escalating burden of non-communicable diseases and injury around the world.
2002:
The Andhra Pradesh Rural Health Initiative is established in partnership with the Centre for Chronic Disease Control in New Delhi, marking the beginning of The George Institute’s work in India.
2004:
The China-Australia Partnership for Health is established in collaboration with Peking University Health Science Center, marking the beginning of The George Institute’s work in China.
The George Institute’s work in the UK begins with the establishment of a London office housing a research group analysing investment trends in the development of new treatments for neglected diseases.
The George Institute centralises its clinical trials operations, which later evolves formally into a commercial entity, George Clinical.
2007:
The George Institute, China is officially established in Beijing.
The George Institute, India is formally established in Hyderabad.
2008:
The George Institute’s London research group receives a major award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
2010:
The George Centre for Healthcare Innovation is established in partnership with the University of Oxford, with generous support from the Oxford Martin School founded by Dr James Martin.
2011:
The George Institute is ranked for the first time among the top 10 research institutions in the world for scientific impact.
2012:
The George Institute, China, signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Peking University Health Science Center, making it an official affiliate. This was renewed in 2017.
2013:
The George Institute, India’s national office is established in New Delhi, with its Hyderabad office continuing as an additional research centre.
The George Institute establishes an office in the UK at the University of Oxford.
The George Institute establishes George Health as its umbrella commercial enterprise.
2015:
The George Institute, UK moves to the Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health within Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division, creating new collaboration opportunities towards improving the health of women across the life course.
2017:
The George Institute, Australia begins a new affiliation with UNSW Sydney.
2018:
The George Institute is ranked the number one research institute in Australia.
2019:
The George Institute celebrates 20 years of driving global impact and ground breaking research.
The George Institute begins a new collaboration with Manipal Academy of Higher Education
2022:
The George Institute begins a new collaboration with Imperial College London
