WHO Releases First Global Status Report on Drowning Prevention

The World Health Organization (WHO) launched its first Global Status Report on Drowning Prevention today, shedding light on a critical but often overlooked global health issue. Around 300000 annual lives lost annually to drowning, the report underscores the urgent need for coordinated action to address this preventable cause of death.

The George Institute for Global Health supports the report’s recommendations and emphasises the need for immediate action to save innocent lives.

“Drowning is a silent epidemic, taking the lives of thousands, particularly young children, in vulnerable regions around the world,” said Dr. Jagnoor Jagnoor, from The George Institute for Global Health. “Structured supervision and the creation of safe spaces for children, like those pioneered by KAVACH, can significantly reduce drowning deaths and improve child development outcomes.”

Drowning in India: A National Crisis

In India’s Sundarbans, drowning has emerged as the leading cause of death for children aged 1-9 years. Young people in the Delta region face constant risks due to proximity to water sources, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

KAVACH, an initiative led by the Child in Need Institute, The George Institute, and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), exemplifies the type of lifesaving interventions recommended by WHO. This program creates safe spaces for children under five, protecting them from water-related dangers while fostering their growth and development.

Accelerating Action

The data presented in WHO’s report provides a powerful impetus to redouble efforts in tackling this preventable crisis. The George Institute calls on governments, policymakers, and stakeholders to prioritize drowning prevention by implementing structured supervision programs, community-led initiatives, and evidence-based interventions.

“Together, we must take decisive action to address this significant public health challenge. The time to act is now,” urged Dr. Jagnoor Jagnoor.
