IMPEND: Identifying multimorbidity patterns and events among Indians
Background
Multimorbidity, defined as the coexistence of two or more chronic conditions, including mental health conditions and infectious diseases of long duration, is an emerging problem with a rising trend in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). With the rapid epidemiological transition occurring in India, multimorbidity has become a significant challenge. However, there is a lack of reliable estimates regarding the patterns of multimorbidity.
Without identifying patients at an increased risk of developing specific combinations result in worse outcomes, it is difficult to plan programs or allocate resources for managing multimorbidity effectively. Therefore, it is essential to generate reliable information on multimorbidity profiles. The study will focus on reviewing analytical methods and available data sources.
In India, it is crucial to understand the process of producing reliable evidence and ensure appropriate benchmarking and validation of multimorbidity profiles for the population. Furthermore, the study will employ an amalgamation of data sources, utilizing various study designs and statistical methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of multimorbidity and its implication in India.
Aim
The project aims to examine methods to investigate multimorbidity patterns using multiple data sources and identify combinations that have the greatest impact on health in Indian adults.
Research Methodology
This is a five-year project divided into three parts:
- Phase 1: Preparation
- Phase 2: Development
- Phase 3: Maturation
The preparatory phase includes data audit and evidence synthesis on multimorbidity patterns. An inception meeting with stakeholders will be conducted to review the methodology, and a multimorbidity tool will be developed.
The development phase will build upon the information gathered in the preparation phase and contribute to the creation of a guidance document for handling and analysing information on multimorbidity patterns. This information will be derived from population-based surveys, hospital records, and disease-specific cohorts.
Based on the data acquired throughout the study and stakeholder interactions, inferences will be made. Using interactive dashboards and policy briefs, project outcomes will be shared during the maturation phase.
Current Status
Currently, the project is in its formative stages. A data audit and a scoping review of the available evidence will be conducted in the upcoming months. Following which a multimorbidity tool will be created and publicly available secondary datasets will be analysed.
Potential Impact
The study aims to synthesise existing knowledge and generate new comprehensive evidence on multimorbidity patterns in India.
The project will include a public participation strategy engaging a wide range of stakeholders to generate valid recommendations for integrated care for individuals with multimorbidity.
