Health systems science

Affordable healthcare is a cornerstone of health equity, yet it remains out of reach for millions globally. This lack of access leaves preventable and treatable conditions unmanaged, driving avoidable suffering, increased morbidity, and higher mortality rates.

The Centre for Health Systems Science (CHSS) is committed to dismantling these barriers and designing equitable, resilient healthcare systems that serve all communities.

Through globally recognised academic and commissioned research, The George Institute addresses pressing questions about policy effectiveness, system reform, and sustainable financing models. By collaborating with governments, health system partners, and communities, we are developing scalable, evidence-based solutions to transform healthcare systems worldwide.
  • 5billion

people lack access to essential health services worldwide

  • 1in 5

health policies and interventions are distributed equally across social groups

The George Institute’s Health Systems Science Program utilises a global multidisciplinary approach to research. Our projects are designed to investigate different health systems and interventions and assess their costs, challenges and effectiveness. With this deeper understanding of how health systems function we can effect deeper change at every level of the health systems sector.

Our programs target key areas to achieve towards specific outcomes:

  • To drive global healthcare equity
  • To evaluate and address technological, economic and systemic impacts
  • To provide effective and researched reform strategies
  • To identify and address global healthcare workforce challenges
