Respiratory

Chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are a growing global health challenge.

Affecting millions, these conditions often remain underdiagnosed and poorly managed, particularly in underserved communities where access to effective care is limited. The burden is most acute in low- and middle-income countries, where inequities in healthcare systems prevent timely diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, regional disparities in access to care lead to preventable deaths, particularly in remote areas.

The Respiratory Group at The George Institute is working to address these challenges by developing innovative solutions and conducting research to transform the way respiratory diseases are diagnosed and managed globally.
  • 10%

of Australians experience breathlessness that chronically limits exertion

  • 10%

DEATHs in australia ARE due to respiratory conditions

  • 31%

of Australian adults have a chronic respiratory disease

  • 70%

OF AUSTRALIAN population with asthma or COPD remain undiagnosed

The Respiratory Group at The George Institute conducts collaborative, multi-country studies to reduce the global burden of respiratory diseases and ensure equitable access to care. With various projects running in multiple countries, our work focuses on:

  • Creating tools to enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in primary care
  • Leading multicentre trials in asthma, COPD, and pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Exploring telemedicine's role in managing respiratory conditions, including during COVID-19
  • Converting research into guidelines, tools, and education for healthcare providers
  • Promoting equitable, affordable care for underserved communities
